5 Tips to avoid Feeling Tired after Eating
Wed 28 04 2021

There many reasons why we feel tired after eating, the most common are the type of food we ate and how much food we consumed. Foods that are rich in protein and carbohydrates make us release more serotonin which regulates sleep and mood cycles. Some other factors can be blamed such as not sleeping well or enough at night, and consuming alcohol while eating, especially during the daytime. To help regulate your tiredness after meals, we present you with 5 tips to avoid feeling tired after eating.

1. Eat little and often

If you are the type of person who waits until coming home from work to eat their lunch, you probably arrive with a pang of huge hunger and ready to eat everything on the table. This is not only unhealthy but also makes you feel sleepy and tired after eating. For this reason, many dieticians would recommend dividing your daily calorie intake into 5 meals daily; breakfast, lunch, dinner, and two snacks. This way you will not feel the need to consume lots of foods in one meal. This will also keep your energy levels balanced throughout the day and makes you avoid feeling hungry.

2. Get good-quality sleep

We’ve already mentioned that not sleeping well can be one reason why you feel tired and sleepy after a meal. Poor quality sleep, accompanied by eating can lead to an increase in serotonin production that triggers your body to feel tired. Therefore, you will not only feel sleepy all day long due to the lack of sleep but you will also feel an increase of tiredness after eating.

3. Be active or go for a walk

We already know (and mentioned before) that being active makes you more alert, and we recommend not working out close to your bedtime so you do not have to struggle with insomnia. For this reason, we recommend that you get active a few minutes after finishing eating as this can help you fend off feelings of tiredness.

4. Take a nap if you need to

In case you are a fan of naps, you can make it a habit to take a short nap during the day. This way you will fight away all feelings of tiredness that may occur (whether from your eating habits or not). This is also healthy for your body as it can help you renew your energy and feel fresh as soon as you wake up.

5. Try bright-light therapy

Bright light therapy is all about exposing yourself to light to reduce tiredness and low feelings such as sadness and anxiety. This type of therapy can be useful if you struggle with tiredness after eating.

Another good way to keep your energy levels high and healthy is to work out and be active. In case you are struggling to do so alone, or need help preparing your workout plan, we recommend you to try the workout feature of StepChain as it will create a workout plan suitable for you and your schedule.
