Here is why working out in winter is the best thing to do!
Mon 09 11 2020

The cold weather is not everybody’s favorite. For many people it is the time to stay inside the house wearing all the clothes that brings comfort and warmth, eating soups and drinking hot teas. While this seems like a great plan especially during rainy days, it does not bring lots of benefits to our physical health. Of course, working out is not something to do on sunny days only, but a daily habit that should be carried on all year long. In fact, working out in the winter, and especially in the cold breeze has double the benefits. Are you curious to know them? Here is a list:

1. Decreases your winter weight gain

We’ve mentioned before than winter for many people means lying on the couch binging food all day long. This will logically lead to weight gain. In fact, studies have found that the average weight gain during winter is from 0.5 to 1 kilogram. Don’t be too happy, because this is said to be the weight that sticks around with you for a longer time and can lead to obesity with time. Therefore working out during the winter is the right thing to do to burn all the unwanted extra weight. It could also help you avoid unhealthy habits and overeating during this season.

2. Helps you burn more calories

Two main solutions for keep away unwanted weight; balanced diet and working out routine. While exercising has long been a good way to burn the extra weight and calories consumed, working out in the winter especially in the cold is even more beneficial, because:

  • It activates the brown adipose tissue

Brown Adipose Tissue or BAT is metabolically energetic tissue that helps produce and distribute heat all over the body. It helps mammals to stay warm in winter’s cold weather and has recently been discovered in humans. In fact, the majority of the fat on our body is stored as inactive WAT (White Adipose Tissue) offering insulation but not being able to generate heat. During severe cold days, energy expenditure (such as the calories burnt) can be increased by the shivering response around 5 times more than the resting level. However, shivering is an uncomfortable response and is not suggested as a way to increase calorie burn.

On the other hand, BAT has a special function. It is activated during cold temperatures which generate the heat needed to function properly. The creation of heat during cold temperatures makes up to 11% more energy expenditure than during the rested position. In fact, a recent study found that the Brown Adipose Tissue acclimatizes to the temperatures outside in order to create more heat and burn more calories when the weather gets colder.

Exercising in the cold temperatures will activate the brown adipose tissue (BAT), improving the body’s capacities to regulate its temperature and burn more calories.

So what are you waiting for? Put on your scarf and running shoes, and go outside!
