The fitness trends of the 2010s
Tue 27 10 2020

Just like every decade, the 2010s had their own fitness trends. Given that 2010 was just ten years away, a lot of today’s trends could be a more developed version of the ones that were practiced 10 years ago. In order to understand how trends are formed and where do they come from, let’s take a look back to the fitness trends of the 2010s.

1. CrossFit

While CrossFit is still practiced today, it actually started around 10 years ago. This type of workouts combines weight lifting, gymnastics and high-intensity interval training and some other type of exercises. In 2007 a strong CrossFit community developed and some series of athletic competitions came to life under the name of the CrossFit Games.

2. Boutique fitness

A boutique fitness studio is considered to be a small studio where community or group exercises are performed. The studio usually targets one specific fitness area or two. This type of gyms or fitness routines grew a lot in the past decade overpassing traditional gyms’ growth.

3. Pole fitness

While pole fitness has been present for a longer time than 2010, it is in the past decade that this type of sport has become less stigmatized and more mainstream. People who take pole dancing courses, develop a distinguishable core strength and some physical skills that help them perform the gravity-defying exercises or moves. Lately, Jennifer Lopez has been spotted doing some pole dancing exercises for her role in the movie “Hustlers.”

The number of pole dancing competitors in the World Pole Sports Championship grew from 43 to 229 athletes between the years 2012 and 2017 and is also being thought of as a sport in the upcoming Olympics.

4. Workouts inspired by boxing

While boxing is one of the most known fight sports, the 2010s took advantage of its fame and incorporated its moves in many other workouts. Boxing is an intensive work out for the whole body so why not make it part of our daily routines? Boxing drills allow you to dodge, punch and weave around an opponent (a punching bag or just another player). This type of routine puts your core to the work alongside other muscle groups and increases your heart rate which is essential if you are looking to get in shape very fast.

5. Zumba

Zumba was born in 1998 but in the past years moved from being some instructions you follow from a DVD player to in-studio dances. Instructors work hard to gain Zumba certifications before having their own courses.

6. Spin classes

Spin classes are in brief, indoor cycling classes. The moves follow high-energy music as if you are working out in a night club, and are known for burning lots of calories. These classes have become more advanced where participants can compete with each other and try to climb a leaderboard where a winner is announced at the end of the class.

Which of these trends have you tried? Are you still practicing any?
