How can athletes cope with the impact of coronavirus?
Mon 10 08 2020

COVID-19 has had a big effect on our lives so far, and athletes are as affected as anyone else. With many sports events being canceled or postponed, players are being faced with new challenges they must overcome. So how can athletes cope with the impact of coronavirus?

The problem is that a big part of an athlete’s life is to compete against other people. This requires training and being with other teammates and coaches. This is made impossible during the COVID-19 crisis where social distancing is mandatory, and gyms are closed down. While many sports events are being postponed or canceled, and it is uncertain when players will be on the field again, they are required to stay ready. For some sports, such as football, players might need to compensate for the delayed games and be ready for the upcoming one in a short period.

This creates some sort of stress that wreaks havoc on athletes’ lives due to change and uncertainty. In addition, some financial issues might arise as the income received from games and competitions is now stopped for the moment. Some athletes might be struggling to maintain high levels of energy during the day due to being less active which can kill off their motivation as well. They might become lazy because of their calmer lifestyle, and experience mental health issues such as anxiety and depression for not achieving the goals they are working for.

What can athletes do during this period?

1. Modify their timeline

Athletes should see this period as a time to improve their skills. They need to work harder during this period in order to compensate and level up so they are ready and better and their next game. While the goals are still the same, the timeline for these goals might change and needs to be adjusted.

2. Be resilient

In this difficult time, resilience is important. The athletes’ way of adapting to the changes of today will affect how they will be able to perform in the future. Not being resilient means giving up, and an athlete who seeks success does not give up in any situation. Try to picture how your opponent is coping and make sure you follow better solutions.

3. Protect themselves against burnout

This period of staying home should be used to relax and recover from previous injuries, improve skills, and rest the mind. Relaxation techniques are important to help an athlete stay mentally healthy during such times and keeping mental issues away. Resting physically and mentally can be very helpful in keeping away burnout symptoms.

4. Use their time well

Now that athletes have more time on their hands, they should be taking advantage of it by doing the right things. This time should be seen as an opportunity to accomplish things they have not been able to improve in the past. An example is trying out new nutritional strategies that can be helpful for building a stronger and healthier body.
